Maceo Paisley & Katie Malia, Line Steppers
Line Steppers, a performance by Maceo Paisley and Katie Malia, unfolds within Albert Oehlen/Peppi Bottrop: Line Packers”. Paisley and Malia’s navigation of a social space in the gallery adds a layer of commentary on labor versus expression in the world of art and entertainment. Curated by Brian Getnick, four performances will take place over two days: August 11 at 1:00pm and 3:00pm and August 12 at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
The formal differences between Oehlen and Bottrop’s approaches to mark-making, which either highlight or mask the gesture of the artist’s hand, challenge the viewer’s perceptions of what constitutes technology or archaic labor and also what signifies the new, erratic and unbridled or the old, formulaic and constrained. Line Steppers is a performance that calls attention to the irony of our interactions and progress in the digital space as compared with our actions in the physical, social space.
Like Jmy James Kidd’s performance Body Bags @ Olafur Eliasson’s Reality Projector downstairs at MAF two weeks ago, Maceo Paisley & Katie Malia’s Line Steppers @ Albert Oehlen/Peppi Bottrop: Line Packers” upstairs at MAF today was an invitation to experience the MAF installation more deeply. More dimensionally. Paisley & Malia’s movement, wardrobe, and music all seemed to bring Oehlen & Bottrop’s work into an even deeper focus. The richness of their work seemed to render the visual art even more accessible.
Neither Albert Oehlen/Peppi Bottrop: Line Packers” nor Reality Projector were intended to be performance spaces per se, still, after Maceo Paisley & Katie Malia’s Line Steppers performance today, I wandered down to Reality Projector and felt a small sense of loss without Jmy James Kidd’s company inhabiting the space.
